This will come as no surprise to those (many) of you who have worked or currently work in higher education. Just because they're college students doesn't mean they can find their asses with both hands.
I am reminded of this on a daily basis. I work in academic services in a building full of people who are helping students 9 hours a day. The receptionist sends most kids down the hall to "the second door on the right". Fifty percent of them end up in my doorway looking bewildered, having not learned their right from their left.
This being the end of my third week, I am still amused. I am further amused by the fact that half of them want to speak to Diana (who works in the office, second door on the right).
My guess is this amusement will turn to annoyance long about the third quarter I'm there. As of now, I know they aren't looking for me; I'm the new person without responsibility except for the paperwork which is sitting before me. I can simply smile and say "across the hall", think to myself "your other right you dumbass".
