I got a letter in the mail the other day from Collective Good, thanking me for my donation. I had almost forgotten...
Collective Good takes old cell phones and refurbishes them or recycles the salvagable parts. According the their website, refurbished phones are sold to distributors and carriers that sell the phones in developing regions like Latin America. The money Collective Good collects from these sales goes to charity.
The best part is that you choose the charity.
If you have a cell phone that you are no longer using, I urge you to donate it to charity. You can find charities that accept phone donations locally - try a women's shelter or children & family services, or visit collectivegood.com to select a charity. (Some charities even provide free shipping labels, see the website for details.)
