We made the mistake of going to the grocery store today. It was bright and sunshiney when we left, so we merrily went about our business.
Whilst we were in the store, the sky broke open and the heavens rained down upon the earth. Tremendous bolts of lightning struck, and thundering commenced. The roof of Kroger's shook and I began to think that we were having an earthquake, but alas it was just the rainstorm outside.
As we looked out the window of the store into the parking lot, we could only see a few feet out into the rain. We decided to browse the greeting card aisle for a bit, in the hopes that it would let up soon.
It did indeed let up, so we hit the checkstand and I paid for the groceries while Kris went to get the car. Just as I was paying for our foodstuffs, the clouds burst again. I pushed the cart out to the overhang outside of the store, sheltered from the pouring rain and Kris pulled the car up to the curb a few feet away. As he was turning the car off, it rained harder, and then harder. It came down the way it does on the Unversal Studios Tour, in wave after wave.
We waited 10 minutes or more, hoping that it would taper. It did, a bit. We finally made a dash for it. But since we only had one broken umbrella, one and a half of us were drenched while trying to load the groceries in the trunk.
As we drove home, waves splashed over the curbs like tides. In an apartment complex up the street from us, I saw a pickup truck wading through the parking lot; water was deep enough to touch his bumper.
August in Savannah Georgia, and I am not making any of this up.
