What I Did Today, or The Forseeable Future

Begin day by being ripped out of a peaceful sleep by annoyingly incessant alarm clock going off far earlier than it should.

Shower and dress (change mind about what to wear two or three or five times before finalizing the dressing process), eat a bowl of Cheerios and down a cup of coffee, make last minute preparations to leave for work, and then run out the door at least 5 minutes after you should have.

Drive for 30 minutes to get to work 6 miles away. Slow down for two school zones, cuss out all the people who should've waited another 30 minutes before going out for a leisurely Sunday drive on a week morning. Help fuel your annoyance for Other People by tuning into NPR so that you can stay informed about how your tax dollars are going to utter waste and how you can and should vote but it won't matter anyway because the doofus who wins will still f things up.

Arrive at work and say hello to all your coworkers who get there 30 minutes before you to Get the Good, Free Parking. Login and check email while maintaining amazement that all those coworkers will still not start working for another good 30 to 45 minutes.

Delete spam.

Work your fingers to the bone without taking a break. Occasionally get up to go to the aid of comrades who can't figure out how to do X in Y program. Feel good about helping for 2.3 minutes before getting annoyed about all the "customers" waiting to be helped in the lobby but who are being ignored because coworkers have already done some work for the day and need to rest.

Realize it is time to go home when the mass of coworkers leaving the building creates a vacuum and your ears pop.

Decide that there is no hope for your desk and your officemate will just have to look at the stacks of work tomorrow.

Get in car and drive 25 minutes to go home. Drive in silence because it's the only moment of peace you've had all day.

Figure out which two cans of food will go best together to make a "meal". Watch Jeopardy because it's the only time during the day that your brain cells actually get a workout.

Check email, delete more spam. Worry about updating your website because people will start posting snide comments about how stale the last post is getting.

Go to bed and try to get some sleep before starting over again.

Ah, the work-a-day grind. Guess my being there and cooking dinner was a "good thing", to quote Martha Stewart.

I'm happy to see a new post. I enjoy reading whatever you have to say.

Know what you mean about coworkers...there were some of those at one of my former places of employment. I leave you to sort that out. :)

I always figured that if the stacks got tall enough, I could hide behind them. But they always found me...Or just threw shit over the top! It occassionally worked for a few minutes, tho'.

It could be even more difficult. You could have hungry kids waiting for dinner, homework help, baths, and lots of attention and love...but that was what got me through it. Doing it for their sakes. I'd probably have run away to live in a tipi, otherwise. You remind me why.

Bless you.

Yes, I am so glad that at this point in my life I don't have kids to add to the mix. I'll have them at a more stable time in my life (haha). :)

Thought you were gonna burst into song there for a minute...

Tumble outta bed and stumble to the kitchen
Pour myself a cup of ambition
And yawn and stretch and try to come to life

They let you dream just to watch 'em shatter
You're just a step on the boss-man's ladder
But you got dreams he'll never take away

Workin' 9 to 5, what a way to make a livin'
Barely gettin' by, it's all takin' and no givin'
They just use your mind and they never give you credit
It's enough to drive you crazy if you let it

;-)

ya know, I've been listening to Dolly Parton lately (I had to get over my pre-concieved notions of her music), and I must say that she has a mighty fine voice, and a lot of the songs are funny, or they at least put a grin on my face. :)

That voice can tug at your heartstrings, too. At least, "I Will Always Love You" does mine.

indeed, I like her versions of songs better than the remakes... Norah Jones does a duet with her on on the new NJ album, I believe. It's wonderful.

Oh cool. I bought a Nora Jones CD a week ago but haven't listened to it yet. I'd liked what little I'd heard from her and the CD was too cheap (at Sam's) to pass up. I'll have to check it out this evening when I get home and see if it has that duet on it.

I could be smoking crack... I heard it while listening to launch cast. So if it's not there, don't hurt me! But I know I heard a duet with Dolly while listening to launch that day and it was awesome. hmm.... that's what I get for listening to launch, some garbled memories... ;)
